Server outtage 9/6-9/7

What happened?

That is an excellent question and we’re still not entirely sure.

I will handle as much full disclosure as I can. We use a host to hold all the data for your pets and their breeding. We use Dreamhost to HOST or HOLD that server for us. This is called a VPS or Virtual Private server. Yesterday at about 1 PM SLT we lost contact with that server.

As soon as errors began to happen, home objects spamming, and people having issues with redeliveries, we called an ALL STOP. This was about 1:26 PM slt. I continued to monitor through the night but was disapointed in Dreamhost’s transparency on the issue, I still do not know what happened, only that connectivity was restored and they are still monitoring. (This means we’re not out of the woods yet).

After an exhaustive talk with my team, i believe we are going to change hosts. This will not be easy and the servers will be down for 48 hours. Meaning effectively we will ALL STOP while domains move. That’s going to be a huge issue for breeders, so we’re going to make it as easy as possible.

What we are looking to do is to do the server move on SEPT 20th and 21st. We will barage with notices ahead of time, and make sure you ALL KNOW we are going to be down. That is an inconvieniance I know but these service disruptions cannot continue.

I hope to have a family meeting sometime in the next few days to get breeder feedback. We need to make sure we do this correctly, and with as little downtime as possible.

We are deeply sorry for the issues the past two days, and we’re going to work to find a solution where we don’t experiance an outtage like that again (though we may have to have a planned one to move hosts)
